Using aex-helper to uninstall the SMP Agent for Unix, Linux and Mac

$
0
0

The aex-helper utility has an option to uninstall the SMP Agent for Unix, Linux and Mac (ULM). Examples of using this command follow.

aex-helper uninstall all -s - shows solutions that are available for uninstallation. Does not uninstall anything.

aex-helper uninstall all - uninstalls all solutions and the base agent.

aex-helper uninstall INVENTORY - Uninstalls only the specified solution. (See output of 'aex-helper list solutions' for solution names to use here.)

aex-helper uninstall CTAGENT -s - shows if anything is dependent on the specified solution.

aex-helper uninstall all -c - shows commands to uninstall each component and acts as if it is uninstalling. Resulted in odd behavior in that 'aex-helper list' did not show any solutions.

aex-helper uninstall - shows the help information for this command.

The built-in help provides the following usage information:

aex-helper uninstall

Usage:

aex-helper uninstall <Solution-Name> [options]

Uninstall a solution.

Options:

<Solution-Name>

The solution that must be uninstalled. Special name 'all' instructs helper to uninstall all of the solutions.

--with-deps

--recursive

-r

Uninstall the solutions that depend on the provided solution. If you do not specify this option and there are any such solutions, uninstalling the provided solution will fail. The flag is implied in case you want to uninstall all of solutions.

--show-only

-s

Do not actually uninstall any solutions, but rather list those that will have to be uninstalled.

--show-commands

-c

Display commands that will be executed in order to uninstall the provided solution and (if needed) its dependents.

Note: One alternate method to uninstall the SMP Agent for ULM is to run the command: sudo /opt/altiris/notification/nsagent/bin/aex-uninstall.

Another method is to run the uninstall script within each components subdirectory, i.e., 'sudo /opt/altiris/notification/<component/.uninstall/<uninstall script>'. This method is not available on all platforms.

ok so if you go here...

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/ideas/auto...

they say you can but I do not know what to do so here is what I did...

  1. went to Tasks> Jobs and Tasks> System Jobs and Tasks> Notification Server> Automation Policy Tasks
  2. cloned Send automation policy e-mail and gave new name Send HPLC e-mail
  3. I am able to modify this but not sure I did it at the right point.

link above says..

Something like this

<!-- SMP:ATTACHMENT:report.htm -->

<html><body>%!results!%</body></html>

<!-- SMP:FILE:c:\eula\something.txt -->

<!-- SMP:BODY -->

<html><body>Attached report for %!message!% computers.</body></html>

So I pasted that in but not working...

so where do I figure out where to put this?

Install Altiris 7.6 cloud enabled agent 100% remotely?

I need a solution

This should be an easy one for you guys since I think the lack of me finding an answer easily means there isn't one.  The confirmation would be nice though.

Assuming I can get the install package to a remote PC outside the network and run the 7.6 agent install, is it possible to activate the cloud communications and get the agent registered without having to bring it inside the network to get it configured?

My feeble attempts so far have only led to "agent not registered yet" and "platform server disconnected" errors.  I also haven't been able to search any process for how to do this so I suspect it's not possible.  Anyone have a suggestion or am I dreaming?

First post - let's see how it goes.  Using Workflow 7.6.

I have a TextMerge in a look that concatenates a string and adds each loop - I just get one long string.  I want a new line CR after every loop.  I'd also like a tab.

I've tried \t \n\l  {tab} that kind of thing.  Anyone know if/where this is documented?

Staffing Altiris Infrastructure

$
0
0

I have not seen any discussions about staffing Altiris Infrastructure, so let me bring my view for others.

Managing Desktop Users is one of the most challenging activities in IT world.

Improper (usually insufficient) personnel may result in decreased quality of service and demotivated administrators and operators.

I hope that everyone would agree that most problems start between keyboard and chair.

Management Platform can be configured in multiple ways, and also requirements may differ reasonably, so let’s consider something mid-size:

  • Assume environment of 1 hierarchy, Parent and 5x Child SMP, with 20x SS on each (total of 100x SS)
  • 20,000 devices on each SMP, so total managed is 100,000 nodes, plus infrastructure servers.
  • Dedicated server for IT Analytics (optional)
  • CMDB databases most likely on Failover SQL Cluster (recommended) or any available SQL instance(s).
  • Client Management Suite installed and used for Inventory, SW Delivery and Patching.

For such environment I would plan this staffing:

Service Owner (SO)

That person must have good management and communication skills, to coordinate team and deal with customers.

Desktop management is never easy, since users are demanding, do not like having “their” computers managed and rebooted by us, and whatever we do perfect and fast, is often seen as bad and late.

SO must “sell” our service to customer and coordinate any requirements for additional resources or mitigate complains on our doing.

Altiris Architect (AA)

Architect does design, coordinates implementation and configuration on technical level.

AA is owning licenses, service accounts and passwords, and is supervising configuration on high level.

Environment should be quarterly revised to decide on upgrades, reconfiguration, and optimization.

AA is also having role in 3rd level support and coordinates documentation and similar bureaucracy.

Remote Product Specialist (RPS)

I see very useful to have contracted Symantec Support, to assist in situation when problems require vendor’s help. Problems could be also raised on MySymantec portal, but there is not fast response.

My experience is that you can expect about 1-2 problems per months, so 25% of RPS should be fine.

Platform Administrators (ADM)

Several administrators are needed to run the show. At least one available at any moment.

Their responsibilities are to setup, configure and troubleshoot all platform.

Part of that is also continuous platform monitoring and optimization along with advice from AA.

Part of that is also Site Configuration (servers, services and subnets) and traffic control.

They would also act as 2nd level support and should have senior skills and experience.

Solution Operators (SOP)

That is quite tricky, let’s take it by parts. You would need several operators for different roles.

Inventory

Looks easy, but actually is not, if we consider more than just HW+SW inventory task enabled.

You may need to create many Custom Scans to satisfy specific requirements from business.

Inventory tasks must be also carefully scheduled (proper timing, and frequency, full or delta mode. Wrong configuration may result in heavy upload to SMP server in short interval.

Patch Assessment (default is every 4 hours) may also create utilization which is not welcome.

Last but not least, multiple methods of SW Inventory (Add-Remove and File Audit) should be combined together in SW Catalog, which is optional, but very useful if you plan for managed delivery or Metering.

Patch Management

That can be very easy, but also quite complex - depends on what you have agreed with customer.

All patches should be carefully tested prior to deployment, and installed in phases.

If you are not allowed to reboot machines as needed, it may be challenge to achieve good compliance.

Non-MS Patches are often tricky, requiring additional SWD tasks to suppress auto-update or so.

Nightmare can be to rollback patches, since some of them may adversely affect your internal application, which is never known soon enough.

SW Delivery

You do the best if you have all SW packages tested and customized (=packaged) prior to automated deployment. No pop-ups. No license agreements. No intervention from end user. No reboots.

All packages should be imported to your SW Library, and deployed from there, having closely linked with your SW Catalog, maintained by Inventory Operator. Optional, but nice to have.

Other Specialists

Consider having also other specialists available past time or when needed:

  • Reporting Technician should have experience in SQL Analysis and Reporting services
  • Database Sysadmin with deep experience in SQL, since CMDB is heard of Management Platform
  • Scripting Guru is always welcome, to automate things and deep dive in troubleshooting
  • Network Specialist to help in analyzing network traffic and assist advise on Site Settings

Saying all that, you would need:

  • 1x Service Owner
  • 1x Altiris Architect
  • 3x Platform Administrator
  • 5x Solution Operator
  • 1x Specialist (all part time combined = 4x 25%)

For AA and PA ask for certification and 5+ years experience.

Please take that as a basis, since it also depend on your topography:

One large country is easier to manage - than several countries and languages, spread across multiple regions.

Just in case you plan for larger or smaller environment.

Do not just divide or multiple count of these roles.

More or less devices does not automatically require more or less work.

  • For enterprise with 50,000 managed devices, I would reduce your staff by 20%.
  • For enterprise with 200,000 managed devices consider 50% extra technicians.

Well, that’s it.

I would welcome your comments.

Any opinion moves us all ahead.

Patch Management Reporting and Asset Status

$

I need a solution

Just trying to fully understand how to best manage assets in our environment.  The issue that comes up is that many assets have different status values but still appear in the Patch Management Reports.  For most Status values except "Retired", the assets still appear in the Patch Management reporting.  (did not test Disposed)

Scenario:

Many assets are either set to "In Stock", have been returned for repair "RMA", "Missing".  We have confirmed that setting the machines to these status values will be updated to "Active" if they talk to the Symantec Management Console.

We are wondering if there is a way to only include "Active" status computers in the Patch Management Reporting.  We want to be aggressive in patching machines, and use reporting to identify those machines that are not fully patched.  What makes no sense is continuously dealing with "In Stock", "RMA" type status values.  It makes the overall numbers for Patch Management incorrect and give a false impression of risk in the organization.  If a machine is on the shelf in the stock room, it is NOT a threat until it is attached to the network.

Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 with all public updates before it became EOL.

SQL 2005 SP4 on-box.

NS 6.0 SP3 R13

Console 6.5 + updates

Task Server 6.0 + updates

AD Connector 6.1 + update

The above is my base snapshot.

On top of the base snapshot, I initally installed CMS L1 successfully, and first ran into this issue when I went to install CMS L2.

I found https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/troubleshooting-altiris-manageability-toolkit-vpro-technology-part-5-real-time-console-infr which unfortuantely did not help.

I then reverted back to my bas snapshot and just tried instaling RTCI on its own, but it still failed.

I cam honestly say that this is the first time I have had problems installing RTCI 6.x throughout all the years of supporting this product.

It starts the install but then stops for an unknown reason and rolls back.

I need a solution

Hello,

I've got a problem with the deployment (Altiris 7.5) of a task of Pdfcreator 2.2.1

I'm using a Software task where it installs the software with the command line :

"PDFCreator-2_2_1-setup.exe" /LOADINF="uds.inf" /VERYSILENT /COMPONENTS="program,ghostscript" /NORESTART /FORCEINSTALL

it appears that there is no problem with this command line.

It works well when no Pdfcreator is found, but when PdfCreator 2.1 is found the task exit with error -100, but the software is well updated.

Could someone tell me what is that issue and how to solve it ?

Thanks in advance

Product Enhancement Request - WOL (post HF3)

I need a solution

Hello GSS development folks, I have a request for future development post HF3.

I just started using GSS 3 with the release of HF3 (and autmotion folders as a replacement for the virtual partition).  SO far, so good, but I've only done some basic stuff so far and I'm beginning to absorb the learning curve of possibilities.

One item that has caught my attention is the way GSS3.0 manages WOL vs. the 2.5 system.  It appears that GSS3 looks for an active agent on a local subnet to relay the WOL packets (proxy WOL) form the server.  It looks like in order to do so the (Altiris) agent needs to be pre-configured to act as a WOL proxy, no more than 2-3 computers recommended per subnet, and of course one of them has to be up-and-running.

In he 2.5 console WOL was a 'no brainer' for us  ...create a task involving WOL, identifiy a computer or group of computers and execute.  Beautiful.

Do you know if there is a way I can configure a switch or router to relay do the job of the agent, I can certainly give that a try.  I guess I would need to know the type of packets sent from the GSS server (and\or the WOL standard used) so my network folks could maybe do a reconfig for forwarding.

Thank you.

-->Mark S.

Has image compression been deprecated with GSS3 HF3?

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hello all,

I've just started playing with GSS3.0 with the release of HF3.  I noticed in a video about capturing a windows7 image that there were options to compress the images that are being captured.   I didn't see that option when I was essentially doing the same thing in my HF3 console.

Has that been deprecated in the console?  It's not something I've used very often in my experience with Ghost, it's just that my experimental server was pressed for space when I started out. I suppose I could add a switch to the imaging command line to do the same thing  ....now where did that list of command line switches go??

Thank you,

-->Mark S.

Symantec Management Agent 7.6 - Large Package Size

When testing upgrade from SMP 7.5 to 7.6 I have realized, that SMA 7.6 package is larger than usually,

It used to be around 15 MB and now it is over 45 MB.

SMA76_Pkg_Prop.png

I have verified content of that package, which is located at NSCap in Win32\X86\NS Client Package folder:

SMA76_Pkg_NSCAP.png

I could see that this folder actually contains three 15 MB installers, from which actually only one is used to upgrade particular SMA:

AeXNSC.exe -s -a /s /install/platform=x86

SMA76_Pkg_X86NSCP.png

When planning upgrade, consider customizing that package to contain only SMA installer you need.

That way you can reasonably save on your networks, and speedup client upgrade.

GSS 3.0 - How Do I Change DAgent Settings For Managed Computers?

$

I need a solution

Coming from GSS 2.5.1, (which we've been using for around 10yrs.), I've become more familiar with GSS 3.0 since beta.  I'm in IT (point person responsible for evaluating GSS 3.0 for (3) colleges and District office).

What I understand so far is (2) options affect new computers and their "Production Agent Settings" (DAgent located on client);

- Tools/Options/Agent Settings

- Tools/Remote Agent Installer

Both have their settings for new PCs and I don't understand why there are (2) separate options, as one doesn't affect the other. While changing either of these do affect new clients, they have no affect on managed clients.

What my immediate question is, fine 1 of these 2 will address setting for new computers, but how are already "managed computers" (those known to the console) receive updates/changes to the local client's DAgent?  Changes could be made to the timeout experienced at the client end when tasks are performed (current default is 120 seconds) or a change of "Administrator credentials" which happens every 90 days (security - best practices) and we would need these to be reflected at the client end ASAP.

I've read all available documentation/videos I could find (i.e. User Guide, Automation Folders, forum postings, etc.) and I haven't been able to locate an answer.  Any insight further would be greatly appreciated!

Patching SLES (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server)

I need a solution

Hi, if anyone can shed any light on why I would want to do this using Symantec's patch management solution it would be greatly appreciated.

It is documented (and I have had these issues confirmed by Symantec tech support) that you cannot update the kernel with it, nor will it cater for dependancy packages (updates requiring dependancies to be installed will simply fail to install until the dependancy is installed first). Because of this I can't see a single reason why anyone would use this solution as I will have to use a SUSE SMT server anyway. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Many Thanks.
